Why is Online Safety so important?
Online technologies play a huge role in the daily lives of our children and so providing a broad and balanced online safety education is vital to ensuring that pupils can navigate the online world safely and positively.
At George Street Primary we firmly believe in equipping each of our pupils with lifelong skills that they need in order to thrive as 21st century citizens. We endeavour to provide pupils with a range of digital equipment and experiences throughout their time at George Street, helping them to become confident and competent users of technologies.
Keeping up to date with what your children are doing online can seem like a daunting task. Technology is constantly developing and changing, which often leaves parents and carers feeling that their children know more about the internet and technology than they do.
Whatever their age, there is a wealth of information and guidance where you can find out more about what they might be doing online. On this page, you will find links to simple, practical and easy advice on the steps you can take as a parent to keep them as safe as possible.
What is a Digital Citizen?
With the introduction of the new Digital Competency Framework in Wales, we have welcoming the introduction of a range of skills which help children to become good digital citizens. The focus is on learners developing the skills needed to contribute positively to the digital world around them. These skills will help learners to critically evaluate their place within the digital world, so that they are prepared to encounter the positive and negative aspects of being a digital citizen.
NPSCC: Share Aware
We often talk to children about crossing the road, bullying and speaking to strangers, but are we as confident when discussing online-safety?
Having regular conversations about what your child is doing online - just like you would their day at school - is the best way to keep them safe.
You'll be able to spot any problems, encourage them to come to you if they’re worried and make sure they know what’s ok to share online - and what’s not.
